Christian Eriksen, the Danish midfielder currently playing for Manchester United, appears to be nearing the end of his tenure with the club. His contract with Manchester United is set to expire in July 2025, and recent developments suggest he is preparing to leave as a free agent when it concludes.
Eriksen joined Manchester United in the summer of 2022 on a three-year deal, following an impressive stint at Brentford where he revitalized his career after a life-threatening cardiac arrest during the Euro 2020 tournament. His time at United has been a mix of highs and lows.
Under Erik ten Hag, he initially played a significant role, contributing to the team’s Carabao Cup victory in 2023 and their third-place Premier League finish in the 2022-23 season.
However, his playing time has diminished in the 2023-24 and current 2024-25 seasons, particularly following the arrival of new manager Rúben Amorim and the emergence of younger talents like Kobbie Mainoo.
This season, as of mid-March 2025, Eriksen has started only a handful of Premier League matches, with his role largely reduced to substitute appearances or cup competitions.
Recent statements from Eriksen indicate his acceptance of an impending departure. In an interview with Danish outlet TV2 Danmark, he expressed that while he has enjoyed his time at Manchester United, describing it as “a really, really good time,” he does not intend to return to the Danish Superliga just yet, feeling it’s “too soon” and that he still has “a few good years abroad” left in him.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also weighed in, stating unequivocally that there are “no doubts or change of plans” regarding Eriksen’s future, confirming his departure from Manchester United as a free agent in July 2025.
This aligns with the club’s broader squad overhaul under Amorim and the INEOS-led management, who are reportedly planning to offload several players, including Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans, whose contracts all expire in the summer of 2025, to make room for new signings and reduce wage costs.
While Eriksen’s next destination remains unclear, his comments suggest he is open to continuing his career abroad rather than returning to Denmark immediately.
At 33 years old (turning 34 in February 2026), he still believes he has competitive years ahead, likely attracting interest from clubs in Europe or potentially further afield, given his experience and technical quality. His departure will mark the end of a two-and-a-half-year chapter at Old Trafford, where he made notable contributions but ultimately couldn’t secure a long-term role amid the club’s evolving project.
