Chelsea got their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup rolling with a tidy 2-0 win over LAFC in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, though the stands were half-empty. Hot off their UEFA Conference League title, the Blues played with swagger, and new kid Liam Delap lit up the pitch.
Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead in the 34th minute, darting past LAFC’s Ryan Hollingshead after a killer pass from Nicolas Jackson and smashing it past Hugo Lloris. LAFC, with old Chelsea favorite Olivier Giroud up top, gave it a go after halftime, but the Blues were just too good.

Then came Delap, the £30m signing from Ipswich, who hopped off the bench in the 64th minute and owned the moment. Fifteen minutes later, he bombed down the right and slung a perfect cross for Enzo Fernandez to tap in the second goal. “Liam’s got our vibe,” grinned boss Enzo Maresca. “He’s picking it up fast.” Delap, 22, who ditched England’s U21 Euros for this tournament, is already gunning for Jackson’s spot: “You gotta fight for it at Chelsea.”

Only 22,137 fans showed up in a 71,000-seat stadium, which got some folks talking, but Chelsea stayed dialed in. They’re off to Philly next to face Flamengo on June 20, and Delap’s got fans buzzing about a deep run.
