Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious career added another chapter of triumph when he captained Portugal to their second UEFA Nations League title in 2025, defeating Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

At 40, Ronaldo proved his enduring brilliance, playing a pivotal role in Portugal’s journey to becoming the first nation to win the competition twice, following their inaugural victory in 2019.

In the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, Ronaldo was instrumental. He scored the decisive goal in the semifinal against Germany, securing a 2-1 victory and Portugal’s first win over Germany since 2000. In the final against Spain, a match billed as a generational clash between Ronaldo and 17-year-old prodigy Lamine Yamal, Portugal faced intense pressure.

Spain took the lead through Martín Zubimendi’s close-range finish, but Nuno Mendes equalized with a powerful strike. After Spain regained the lead via Mikel Oyarzabal, Ronaldo delivered a crucial 61st-minute volley to level the score at 2-2, forcing extra time.

Despite a muscle strain forcing him off in the 88th minute, Ronaldo’s equalizer set the stage for Portugal’s triumph.

The final went to penalties, where goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s save on Álvaro Morata’s attempt and Rúben Neves’ decisive spot-kick clinched a 5-3 shootout victory.

Ronaldo, emotional and in tears, celebrated his third international trophy—Euro 2016 and two Nations Leagues—calling it “a great joy” for Portugal’s new generation and fans.

His eight goals in the tournament made him the joint second-highest scorer, trailing only Erling Haaland.

Ronaldo’s performance underscored his unrelenting drive. “Winning for Portugal is very special,” he said, emphasizing the unique pride of national team success despite his vast club accolades.

Even with physical challenges, including pain during warm-ups, Ronaldo’s determination shone through, as he declared he’d play through any injury for his country.

This victory, against a formidable Spain side, silenced doubters and reaffirmed Ronaldo’s ability to deliver on the biggest stages, adding to his record-breaking 138 international goals in 219 appearances.

Portugal’s collective strength, with standout performances from Mendes, Vitinha, and Neves, complemented Ronaldo’s heroics, proving the team’s depth. For Ronaldo, this triumph was not just another trophy but a testament to his enduring legacy, inspiring a nation and a new generation of players.
